Overview of production units

Direct Reduced Iron

In June 2011, Arfa Direct Reduced Iron by Midrex method was put into operation with an annual production capacity of 800,000 tons of sponge iron and 60,000 tons of briquettes .This unit managed to record a production equal to more than 5% of its nominal capacity in the first year after its launch. In order to ensure the full consumption of steelmaking by the approach of economic production and job creation, in 2021, for the first time in the world, a 50% capacity increase plan was implemented without increasing the volume of the recovery furnace.

Steelmaking unit

In June 2012, steelmaking unit of Arfa Iron and Steel Company was put into operation and in the same month, steel production started. Achieving nominal capacity in 2017 (the fifth year of production) and producing more than 6% of its capacity in 2018 which is considered as an unprecedented record in Iran’s steel industry was a turning point in the history of "Arfa Iron and Steel Company". In August 2022, sticking to the approach of maintaining domestic customers while increasing exports rate, a plan to increase production capacity by 25% was carried out. Within this capacity increase, in addition to increasing production, the ability to produce 125x125 mm and 225 mm round sections was added to the rest of Arfa’s production sections, including 130x130 mm, 150x150 mm, and 200x200 mm sections.

Electric arc furnace

In steelmaking unit of Arfa Iron and Steel Company, molten steel is produced by the use of electric arc furnace (EAF) which from an environmental point of view is the cleanest method among the methods of producing molten steel. The electric arc furnace used in Arfa Iron and Steel Company is one of the most modern furnaces in the country and the result of modern Italian technology. This furnace with a capacity of 180 tons can produce 3100 tons of molten steel daily. One of its most important advantages is that the electric arc furnace of Arfa Iron and Steel Company's steelmaking unit is equipped with automatic oxygen and carbon injection lances.

Ladle furnace

Arfa ‘s existing ladle furnace has a capacity of 180 tons, with automatic charging, and being fired from the floor. Due to the fact that quality production is very important to Arfa Iron and Steel Company, in this furnace, the molten steel discharged from the electric arc furnace is subjected to blowing operation only by argon (neutral gas) and impurities such as Sulphur are separated from it. The work of the ladle furnace is exactly the same as the electric arc furnace, with the only difference being that instead of using the body of the electric arc furnace, the container itself is used as the furnace body.

Vacuum Degasser

One of the distinctive features of Arfa Iron and Steel Company’s steel plant which distinguishes it from many steel plants in the country is its use of vacuum degassing and decarbonisation section (VD-VOD). In this section, after exposing the molten metal to vacuum and undergoing other processes, it is possible to produce all kinds of quality and alloy steels for sensitive applications. Arfa Iron and Steel Co., with its VD-VOD department and the ability to produce a wide range of quality and alloy steels, can have an impact on reducing the import rate of these steels to the country.

Continuous casting

In the steelmaking unit of Arfa Iron and steel co., the applied casting machine is of arc type and it has 6 casting lines. Its casting moulds are equipped with an electromagnetic stirrer (EMS) which makes the produced ingot to be of a desirable metallurgical structure and so its end product would be of a high quality. Also, the auxiliary casting equipment, including subsurface and protected casting facilities, has caused the products of Arfa Iron and Steel Company to be free of gas bubbles and have a very fine surface quality.
